Detroit's Youth Taught Aviation Skills through Summer Program

Students gain new skills and are exposed to new career paths through Ford Resource and Engagement Center's Drone and Aviation program

DETROIT — Over the past several weeks, students at Ford's Resource and Engagement Center (FREC) on Detroit's Eastside assembled increasingly complex types of aircraft, from paper airplanes, to compressed air rockets, and to a battery powered drone, all while developing and mastering basic piloting techniques. FREC's Drone and Aviation Camp, which is supported by community partner Neighborhood Legal Services, exposes students to engineering concepts that were put into practice during a drone race at the conclusion of the program.

The Drone and Aviation program is one of the many innovative educational and training opportunities at the Ford Resource and Engagement Center created for community youth. Drone piloting combines both computer coding and piloting skills and demands for drone pilots in the photography and motion picture industries have created new career paths.
